Violence is atat a gutter moral level when children are purposely starved to emancipation. Even before the brutal Hamas attack on October 7, the nutrition available for most Gaza residents was at a level just above starvation, as purposely planned by Israel which governs what food is imported into Gaza.It is painful for parents to hear their children clamor for food, see them stuff grass and inedible items into their mouths, and to see their listless faces as their bodies begin to shutdown for lack of nutrition. And because of the long-term effects of malnutrition, these children are already stunted… Read More
In 2005, 2006, 2008, I lived with Palestinians in the West Bank in the maelstrom of Jewish settler violence. I was a trained member of Christian Peacemaker Teams. We worked along with Jewish peace activists and their organizations. So I have empathy for Palestinians who suffer from violence and oppression. I also have empathy for Jews who also have suffered horrendous violent persecution, with hatred against them still prevalent. So many Jews see the state of Israel as a haven.See this insightful article by pastor Jonny Rashid that says what I feel.
The Christmas Story is not all Joseph, Mary, baby Jesus surrounded by awakened shepherds and knew-bowing Wisemen. The egotistical, sadistic King Herod ordered the slaughter of all young male children in Bethlehem. The Bible records that the mothers wailed in their weeping over their slain children. Is there any sight or sound more heart-rending than that of a mother whose child has died? Jesus escaped by miracle. But in much of the world, young children are being slaughtered, wounded, and psychologically traumatized by war. What is especially indicting for those of us in the United States is that the U.S.… Read More
I will write more on the conflicts in Palestine and Israel later. My heart aches. As one who believes that to follow Jesus is the way to justice, peace, and flourishing, albeit the pathway may be misunderstood and opposed, i cannot countenance retaliation, revenge, hatred.I recently signed a petition, “An Open Letter from Palestinian Christians to Western Church Leaders and Theologians.” Pray and act upon prayer.
Herding sheep into others’ fields, preventing access to water, blocking roads, killing animals and breaking into homes in the middle of the night – these and other tactics are part of the daily terror perpetrated by settlers in Palestinian villages. I witnessed these tactics when I lived with Palestinians in the southern Hebron Hills (Masafer Yatta) in 2005, 2006, 2008. It is even worse now since the extreme racist Isaeli government has taken power. This settler violence is a wicked distortion, betrayal and perversion of God’s biblical calling forth Jews to be an instrument of righteousness. Here are two articles… Read More
The following article’s subtitle says to modern Jews, “It was not baseless hatred that led to the destruction of the Temple in antiquity. It was the arrogance of the military and the absence of political judiciousness – precisely the same dangers we now face.” Read this lament by a modern Jewish author who distinguishes between God’s original intent for Israel and Israel’s misappropriation over millennia.
