Trump Endorses the “God Bless the USA Bible”

A new Bible is now out, endorsed by Donald J. Trump, and sponsored by Lee Greenwood who (in)famously sang the hit tune, “God Bless the USA.” This Bible sells for $59.95. King James Version is many centuries past copyright expiration, so no outgoing royalty fees for publishing. It does include the U.S. Constitution, Pledge of Allegiance, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence. This is a glaring example of idolatry: Conflating America side by side or above God breaking the First, Second, and Third Commandments of the Decalogue. It is simony, which is making money by using God. It is… Read More

I Am in the Crowd on Palm Sunday: What Do I Expect from the Messiah?

I Am in the Crowd on Palm Sunday: What Do I Expect from the Messiah?

The most seductively dangerous idolatry is to make Jesus into our own image and likeness. We worship the false image and we will fight furiously to defend our idol we make of Jesus. It may take our prayers and the prayers of others that God will hear and crush the idolatry. May we all worship Jesus in Spirit and in truth. When Jesus rode a young unridden donkey into Jerusalem, the crowds cheered him as their long-expected Messiah who they wanted to break the yoke of Roman rule and to establish their own religious nation. Jesus disappointed them by ending… Read More

Empathizing with Both Israel and Palestinian Victims of Violence

Empathizing with Both Israel and Palestinian Victims of Violence

In 2005, 2006, 2008, I lived with Palestinians in the West Bank in the maelstrom of Jewish settler violence. I was a trained member of Christian Peacemaker Teams. We worked along with Jewish peace activists and their organizations. So I have empathy for Palestinians who suffer from violence and oppression. I also have empathy for Jews who also have suffered horrendous violent persecution, with hatred against them still prevalent. So many Jews see the state of Israel as a haven.See this insightful article by pastor Jonny Rashid that says what I feel.

My Heart Mourns: Israel and Palestine

My Heart Mourns: Israel and Palestine

I will write more on the conflicts in Palestine and Israel later. My heart aches. As one who believes that to follow Jesus is the way to justice, peace, and flourishing, albeit the pathway may be misunderstood and opposed, i cannot countenance retaliation, revenge, hatred.I recently signed a petition, “An Open Letter from Palestinian Christians to Western Church Leaders and Theologians.” Pray and act upon prayer.

What Did the Early Church Say About Economic Justice?

What Did the Early Church Say About Economic Justice?

By St. Augustine, John Chrysostom, and Basil the Great The Plough is a publication of the Bruderhof, a Christian community of sharing goods. The introduction to some teachings of these three early Christian fathers begins, “In an age when Christianity is comfortably entwined with consumer capitalism, the early Christians’ passion for social and economic justice can come as a shock. From the first days of Christianity, the duty to care for the poor and marginalized was at the center of the gospel. Jesus preached a way of life free of possessions, the first church in Jerusalem abolished private property, and… Read More

War is an Evil Tool of Satan

War is an Evil Tool of Satan

The caption to this picture is the following: “An Iraqi family reacts after three family members, innocent civilians, were shot and killed by U.S. Marines in an incident in Baghdad, Iraq, on April 9, 2003.” (Photo by Carolyn Cole/Los Angeles Times via Getty Images) This picture hurts my heart. Look at the pain of the mother and surviving children at the murder of their children. Yes, murder, because the U.S. invasion of Iraq was justified by blatant lies propagandized by cowardly inept news media to the gullible American public still seething over the 9-11 attacks on the World Trade Center… Read More
